State Budgets

Working with a state budget presents more immediate political challenges than the national budget. Without deficit spending for most states, Governors and lawmakers must equalize tax revenue with spending. This leads to difficult decisions and short term political costs.

Describe your ideal allocation of resources, as Governor, for the following categories of spending. Defend your allocation with some reasoning both in terms you would share with the public and next in terms you would share with private advisors (political decisions). Put some percentage of the budget for each of the following (adding up to 100%):

1. Transportation (Road Maintenance, Construction, Public Transportation)
2. Public Safety (Police, Fire, etc.)
3. Education (public schools, university system, etc.)
4. Social Services (welfare, unemployment, healthcare, etc.)
5. Research (grant money to universities and businesses for innovation)
